King William Road is delighted to partner with Little Heroes Foundation, shining a light on this remarkable organisation and the incredible difference it makes in our community. Together, we celebrate the heartwarming work they do to support children and families in need - and shine as one community this festive season.
A Powerful Beginning
Founded in 1996 by inaugural Adelaide Crows captain Chris McDermott and his teammate Tony McGuinness, the Little Heroes Foundation has long been a beacon of hope for children facing life-threatening illnesses and their families across South Australia. The foundation’s mission is centred on both physical and mental well-being, funding vital research, equipment, and facilities for the children who need them most.
From Childhood Cancer to Childhood Dementia
For its first 27 years, the Little Heroes Foundation primarily focused on childhood cancer, helping to fund major equipment and refurbishment projects at Adelaide’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
In recent years, however, the foundation has shifted its focus to a disease that remains one of the most under-researched and underfunded in the world: childhood dementia. Despite claiming as many young lives each year as childhood cancer, it has historically received far less attention and funding. Today, the foundation’s primary mission lies in raising both funds and awareness to combat this devastating condition, making great strides through partnerships with government and research institutions.
In collaboration with the State Government, the Little Heroes Foundation has raised more than $500,000 to fund crucial research at Flinders University, with the goal of finding a cure for this rare and often misunderstood disease.
